The Golf GTD replaces the iconic GTI which was the first of the hot hatches. But compare the current edition with the first and you'll get an idea of just how much it has evolved. The modern version is more like an executive car in terms of refinement. It has executive car type equipment too, with stability control, dual zone climate control, room for four to travel in comfort and a big and well shaped boot.
Although the GTD badge may be unfamiliar, it's not a new one. Some 20 years ago VW produced a 1.6-litre turbo diesel clone of the GTI. This time they have tried harder to give the GTD an individual look and yet, despite all this refinement, the spirit of the first GTI lives on in the purposeful looks and details like the flat bottomed steering wheel.
