The History of Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with luxury passenger cars, with its lineage dating back to 1886 when Karl Benz invented the first automobile propelled by an internal combustion engine. From this moment, innovation and technology have been a hallmark of all Mercedes vehicles. In 2018, Mercedes-Benz was the largest seller of premium vehicles in the world with a staggering 2.31 million passenger vehicles sold worldwide. Avis Prestige’s hire fleet of luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicles are ready and waiting for you to experience the premium quality of the brand.
Mercedes as a brand was first marketed back in 1901, when a car was named the ‘Mercedes 35 hp’ after the daughter of automobile engineer Emil Jellinek. Jellinek was working with Gottlieb Daimler’s company, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), and they went on to register ‘Mercedes’ as a protected trademark worldwide. Following a merger of Karl Benz’s and Gottlieb Daimler’s companies into Daimler-Benz in 1926, the first Mercedes-Benz brand name vehicles were produced.
Over the years, Mercedes have produced some memorable and renowned vehicles. The 770 Mercedes-Benz was an extremely popular model throughout the 1930s, and the 1990s saw the birth of the infamous Mercedes SLK and Mercedes A-Class ranges. Trusted by diplomats worldwide, the Mercedes 600 and Mercedes 600S Pullman Guard Limousines offer the option of armour plating, making them an ideal choice. Often, the Pontiff’s Popemobile has been a Mercedes-Benz.
Mercedes-Benz is continuously exploring ways to improve and advance in both design and technology. From being the first company to use brakes on all four wheels of a car, to pioneering an imminent crash safety system, Mercedes has led the field in automotive safety. Now, with six battery factories across three continents and having unveiled their first fully electric car, the Mercedes EQC in 2018, their aim is to ensure every Mercedes-Benz vehicle has a fully electric or hybrid version available on the market.
The slogan for the Mercedes-Benz brand is “the best or nothing”, which is evident in their constant pursuit of reinventing the car to make motoring more sustainable for future generations.
